The Director of Medical Services is a leadership position with direct and indirect patient care responsibilities at University Health Services (UHS), the student health service at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The position has responsibility for all medical programs and services and shares (with the Executive Director and the Directors of Operations, Mental Health, Communications and Prevention Services) broad management responsibility for UHS as a whole. The position has direct supervisory responsibility for a multi-disciplinary primary care team that includes Psychiatry, Woman's Health, Occupational Medicine, Travel Medicine, Sexual Health, Allergy/Immunization, Physical Therapy, Athletic Training, a multi-disciplinary medical education program, and ancillary radiology and laboratory services. The position oversees risk management, quality improvement programs, and accreditation for medical services. This position, working in collaboration with other UHS Directors, is expected to develop systems of care that foster continuity of patient care, optimal outcomes for patient health, and a successful health care team environment while supporting the UHS overarching mission of promoting students' academic and personal success through an integrated model of medical, mental health, and prevention activities and services. This position will also provide direct patient care. The position requires strong leadership and communication skills, experience in directing medical staff, knowledge and experience in quality improvement and medical education, and an excellent knowledge base of primary care medicine. Duties are performed under the general supervision of, and the position reports to, the Executive Director of UHS. Principal duties: A. 40% Plans, organizes and directs the delivery of medical services to UHS patients. 1. Oversees Primary Care services, including psychiatry, sexual health, women's health, community health, employee health, athletic training, nutrition, and physical therapy. 2. Oversees clinical services provided by Occupational Medicine staff members. 3. Evaluates the knowledge base and skills of clinical services providers for optimal competency and provides and/or coordinates appropriate staff training. Oversees professional credentialing, privileging, and peer review processes. 4. Hires director reports and may consult on hiring of indirect reports per UHS standards. 5. Responds to communicable disease concerns on the UW-Madison campus. 6. Serves as a clinical resource to providers throughout UHS. 7. Evaluates and responds to patient concerns and complaints. 8. Supports the development, measurement, and achievement of performance standards for quality, service, efficiency and effectiveness for all programs and services. 9. Oversees a multi-disciplinary medical learners teaching and training program. 10. Provides, approves, and oversees implementation of health protocols within UHS. 11. Assures compliance with standards and requirements of accrediting organizations and governmental compliance B. 20-40% Provides direct patient care to students with acute and chronic health needs. C. 20-40% Related major activities 1. Collaborates with other UHS Directors to develop interdisciplinary initiatives, integrating medical, mental health and prevention services, to address issues that affect the health and wellbeing of UW-Madison students. 2. Evaluates and modifies policies and procedures as needed, according to current standards of medical care. 3. Implement current or new policies regarding staff activities and monitors for adherence, usefulness and effectiveness. 4. Collaborates with other UHS Directors services to manage patient care activities at UHS, and identifies areas for improvement. 5. Serves on the Health and Wellbeing Leadership Team; participates in strategic planning, resources allocation. 6. Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement activities at UHS. 7. Participates in UHS committees and workgroups as requested. 8. Represents the division within the UW-Madison campus, Madison community, and local, regional, and national professional organizations. 9. Carries out other duties as assigned by Executive Director. |
