The Community OHNS division consists of Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeons who are employed by or formally affiliated with the Community Duke Health Integrated Practice (cDHIP) as physicians, who are practicing as full-time clinicians without academic effort. The division and its members primarily serve community-based referral networks while meeting access needs within communities that we serve. The Community Division Chief (CDC) is an employed cDHIP otolaryngologist within the Duke Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences (HNS&CS) with a direct report to the Department Chair in close collaboration with the Chief Physician Executive (CPE) of cDHIP.
The goals of the Community Division include:
Clinical/ Quality Oversight
Visibility and interaction with the Chair, Clinical Operations Vice Chair, clinic management and the community providers
Increase clinical connection to department to facilitate subspecialty referrals, clinical trial enrollment, improved access
Establish and maintain quality standards, best practices and value-based care
Encourage participation in clinical conferences
Facilitates credentialling/ recredentialling
Strategy/ Growth
Alignment with respect to strategic growth including new sites
Avoiding internal competition
Alignment with hiring strategy
Alignment with Marketing strategy
Cost Efficiency
Potential to share practice resources across sites and practice subgroups: e.g. space, equipment, staff
Achieve economies of scale by sharing administrative resources eg. scheduling hub, HR
Education
Facilitating use of cDHIP practices as sites for GME, uGME
Pipeline for hiring/retaining current trainees interested in a community practice
The Role of the Community Division Chief (CDC)
Employed by cDHIP for full time clinical otolaryngology practice at Duke Health facilities
The CDC will be a non-regular rank member of the Duke School of Medicine faculty
CDC dedicated effort depending on operational and strategic priorities and expectations
CDC Responsibilities:
Organize and run meetings:
Every other month: Strategy: cDHIP practice leaders, Chair, VC finance/strategy, CAO, VP of network development (optional)
Alternating Every other month: Clinical Oversight: cDHIP practice leaders, CVC, VC quality, DHIP CMO or member of quality/ performance services
Serve as an intermediary between the cDHIP practices and department
Communicate DHIP, Department and Health System announcements with the community practices
Participate in development and restructuring of community compensation models
Participate in bi-monthly Department leadership meetings with Vice Chairs and Division Chiefs
Work with HCAs, Medical Directors, Departmental operations director, Chief of Audiology, and regional DHIP administrators of the community practices to help ensure consistent use of best practices and to work on system initiatives and metrics e.g. access and utilization.
Participate in the process of credentialling/ recredentialling of community providers
Participate in monthly/ quarterly meetings with CPE of cDHIP, COO of network development, and all CDCs
Facilitate and encourage participation of cDHIP members in quality/ clinical conferences: eg M&M, multi-D conferences, tumor board, Indications conf, etc
Will be initial contact for issues that arise with respect to clinical quality or professionalism/ conduct and will work with the Department and CMO of DHIP to resolve these issues
